NIT Srinagar unrest: Outstation students want NIT campus shifted out of Kashmir!

The NIT campus in Sri Nagar Kashmir is slowly returning to normalcy after the clashes between Kashmiri Muslims and students from outside the state studying there, most of them are Hindus with set mindset about Kashmiris, particularly Muslim students .

As a pre planned action, a group of outstation students of the NIT met the Jammu region BJP leaders and Deputy CM Nirmal Singh and PDP’s Education Minister Naeem Akhtar along with officials from Union HRD ministry on April 08 night to discuss the situation at the institute. Obviously the outside students just try to blackmail the Kashmiris students.

Kashmir has got only a few central government institutions and they came to Kashmir after a prolonged persuasion by JK government. Outside students try to impose their will on Kashmiris and when Kashmiris protest, now they want to shift the NIT out of Kashmir. .

These mostly Hindu “students” sought shifting of NIT from Sri Nagar to outside Kashmir valley, maybe to Jammu or in another state. However, their mischievous demand for shifting the NIT out of Kashmir has been outrightly rejected by the HRD ministry officials. It has been made clear to the students,” official sources said on April 09.

The sources said the Ministers and HRD officials however assured the students that their genuine demands like better amenities inside the campus and improving the academic atmosphere will be addressed.

The ministers told the students that security has never been an issue at the NIT but the state government will ensure that concerns on this front will also be addressed. “The ministers asserted that students of the institute have been here at the peak of militancy and no one has ever been harmed,” the sources said.

Meanwhile, an official of the NIT said the meeting was a positive development as the situation inside the campus was improving.

The situation is calm but the outstation students are seemingly still on protest, Registrar, NIT Srinagar as there were no protests at the campus on Saturday morning.
The students are in their hostels as there was no class work since Saturday and Sunday are off days.

The Registrar said it was a positive point that there was no confrontation between non-local and local students. There have been no group confrontations and that is a positive point. He said the administration has been approached by few injured students who want to go home and as per the directions of the Union HRD ministry, arrangements are being made for them.

Remaining students, who want to go, may also submit their details so that necessary action may be taken, he said.

The Board of Governors of the NITs will be meeting on 11 April where all these issues will be addressed. Chairman, Board of Governors, M J Zarabi has appealed the students to help restore normalcy at the campus and help the institute scale great heights. “I have been very distressed at the recent turn of events at this institute. As chairman board of governors NIT Srinagar, my dream and indeed my Endeavour would be to see the institute improve its standard,, excel at least in certain areas and improve its rating further,” Zarabi said in his appeal to the students. He said Kashmir is known as an abode of saints and it is “my dream that NIT Srinagar grows into an institution that serves as a leading example of amity among people from different regions and faiths.”

Students from India go to Kashmir to study and not to do politics, especially to spread the hate message of Hindutva parties there. The NIT drama during watching a cricket match on TV at NIT took place soon after the Mehbooba government took office in Sri Nagar. Indians, including students studying in Kashmir should not the life of Kashmiris more complicated; their life is sufficiently troubled.

Indians are not informed about the status of Kashmir. Indian core media tell lies about Kashmiris being ‘terrorists’ but refuse to tell the people about how and since when Kashmir became an ‘integral ‘ part of India. Kashmiris have lost over 100,000 young people for seeking freedom and sovereignty back form Indian military yoke.

Kashmiris have suffered badly for years now and Indian students should not try to add fuel to their burning feelings against Indian occupational tactics.

Unfortunately, the new CM Mehbooba maintains a low profile in the unrest issue, conveying a wrong signals to Kashmiris who voted for PDP against Congress and NC – both promoted the rise of BJP in JK as part of Indian policy.  PDP now carries forward their pro-BJP legacy.

Who says PDP and Mehbooba are eating away the crops and destroying the fences?
